Why are managers so good? The primary benefit of having a manager on your team is that managers have fewer clients and therefore have more time and desire to work one on one with writers. Agents generally don't have the time to spend hours, days and sometimes months working with writers to develop their project(s) and ready them for the marketplace. And why should they? Their job is primarily to sell. The main interest of the manager is in nurturing the career of the writer, and that includes helping the writer to hone their existing body of work, develop new ideas, work with the writer as they outline new projects, help writers prepare for meetings (including pitches) and provide general career advice. A good manager should also be able to put your work in front of agents and other industry contacts. |
